A Japanese Restaurant

It always looks very warm and cosy this Japanese restaurant with its lampions, red and orange lights that illuminate part of the facade and street. Especially in the evenings when it is dark, cold and drizzling with rain, it has the welcoming atmosphere of a fireplace in a village pub.

Dieses japanische Restaurant sieht immer sehr warm und gemütlich aus, mit seinen Lampions und den roten und orangefarbenen Lampen, die einen Teil der Fassade und Strasse illuminieren. Besonders abends, wenn es dunkel, kalt und regnerisch ist, wirkt das alles so einladend wie ein warmer offener Kamin in einem Dorfpub im ländlichen England.

Coffein

Coffein is the name of a small family run coffee bar in the Neue Schönhauser Street. I always buy my favourite coffee beans there, called Mandaresi, from Florence, Italy. I never understood the fashion to use pads. For me the preparation of a coffee is already half the joy. The grinding of the coffee beans, just enough for the cup, the wonderful smell that evaporates, the sound of the espresso machine, and the near golden milky colour of a good créma..... and then after all you even can drink all this, just perfect.

Coffein heisst eine kleine familienbetriebene Kaffeebar in der Neuen Schönhauser Strasse. Dort kaufe ich immer meine Lieblingskaffeebohnen von der Firma Mandaresi aus Florenz. Ich habe nie verstanden, warum pads so populär geworden sind. Für mich ist schon die Zubereitung eines Kaffees die Hälfte des Vergnügens. Das Mahlen der Kaffeebohnen, gerade genug für eine Tasse, der wunderbare Geruch der aufsteigt, das Geräusch der Espressomaschine, und die fast golden milchige Farbe einer guten Créma .... und dann kann man das Ganze auch noch trinken - einfach perfekt.

Goodbye Nyaga

Nyaga lived next door to me, in the other apartment. Just door to door neighbours we were. He was originally from Tokyo. Now that is very unusual for a cat in Berlin to say "I am from Tokyo", but that is how it was. Actually it was planned that he would go back to Japan again at the beginning of January next year, which really is only a few weeks away, but then, last night, he had to go on a much longer journey. Goodbye Nyaga, you will be missed.

Nyaga lebte gleich nebenan in der Wohnung neben mir. Tür an Tür sozusagen. Er kam ursprünglich aus Tokyo. Dies ist sogar in Berlin eher selten, dass ein Kater der in Berlin wohn von sich sagen kann dass er aus Tokyo stammt, aber so war das nun mal. Eigentlich wollte er jetzt dann im Januar wieder zurück nach Japan reisen, also in ein paar Wochen nur, aber dann mußte er plötzlich letzte Nacht eine viel größere Reise antreten. Auf Wiedersehen Nyaga, Du wirst uns fehlen.

Rain and Snow 2

Another of my rain snow impressions. Those wet surfaces seem to give back some of the light that is so missed around this dark time of the year. If ever there would be the question of renaming this street ( although Unter den Linden is a fine name as it is ) I would suggest to call it "the boulevard of lights".

Noch eine Regen Schnee Impression. Diese feuchten Oberflächen scheinen etwas von dem Licht wiederzugeben, das sonst während dieser dunklen Jahreszeit so vermisst wird. Falls diese Straße je neu benannt werden müßte ( obwohl der Name Unter den Linden eh schon ganz wunderbar klingt ) würde ich vorschlagen sie in den "Boulevard der Lichter" umzubenennen.

Rain and Snow

Snow and rain, a nightmare for every motorist, cyclist or pedestrian, but a sea of colours and shapes, a feast to paint.

Regen und Schnee, sicherlich ein Albtraum für jeden Auto- und Radfahrer und die Fußgänger, aber ein Meer an Farben und Formen, eine Augenweide zum Malen.

Black Coat

A lady in a long elegant black coat. The only source of light is from the door of the ticket booth by the cathedral. Well there still comes a little almost cobalt bluish shine through the large columns, but one has to look very closely..... the blue that is left is fading away by the minute, the days grow shorter and shorter...


Eine Dame in einem langen eleganten schwarzen Mantel. Das einzige Licht kommt von der Tür des Kartenverkaufs des Doms. Doch ein ganz wenig Licht fällt auch durch die großen Säulen, Kobaltblau ist es fast, aber man muß sehr genau hinschauen, das wenige Blau verschwindet sehr schnell, die Tage werden kürzer und kürzer...
