Book Stall

Just on the main entrance of the Humboldt University, situated at Unter den Linden, are these book stalls. For me, they are a symbol, a symbol for the triumph of humanity. You wonder why ? well without wanting to bore you too much with the local history, but there was a time when just across the road, books were put on a big pile and burned, just because the beliefs and philosophy of the authors did not match the beliefs of the ruling powers at that time. Long gone are those dark ages, even if they were at that time designed to last at least a 1000 years, but thankfully that calculation went, as we all know, completely wrong. Today the books by exactly these authors can be found, often just loosely presented in a misused banana cardboard box, just across the road and that is why these book stalls are for me a symbol of humanity.

Direkt am Haupteingang der Humboldt Universität auf der Straße Unter den Linden findet man diese Bücherstände. Für mich sind sie ein Symbol, ein Symbol für den Triumph der Menschlichkeit. Sie fragen sich warum?, nun, ohne Sie jetzt mit der Berliner Geschichte langweilen zu wollen, aber es gab eine Zeit da wurden direkt auf der anderen Straßenseite Bücher aufgetürmt und verbrannt, nur weil die Überzeugung und Philosophie der Autoren nicht mit denen der damals regierenden Mächte zusammenpassten. Diese dunklen Zeiten sind lange vorbei, gleichwohl man für mindestens 1000 Jahre geplant hatte, aber erfreulicherweise ging diese Kalkulation ja schief. Heute können Sie die Bücher just dieser Autoren direkt gegenüber auf der anderen Straßenseite, oft ganz leger in umfunktionierten Bananenkisten präsentiert, finden, und das ist es, warum diese Bücherstände für mich ein Symbol der Humanität sind.
